Project Description

This is my winning submission for the foundation poster contest. “We are foundation.” A collection of words that best describe who makes up the Emily Carr community in a positive and optimistic light.

This is coupled with a manifesto between the bold text to describe who strive to be, and our goal as an institution.

Relevance

In my final semester of foundation year at Emily Carr University I created several submissions for the annual foundation poster contest, this contest chooses student work to be features across the greater Vancouver to advertise the foundation show.

“At Emily Carr we strive to be much more than artists and designers. It is our goal to bring inclusivity, acceptance and diversity within our walls. We firmly believe that only when we work together do we create a better world. We believe that the best work comes from working together and that design is more than aesthetic. We believe design can change the world and that design is the foundation of our world. We believe that good design is the root to all happiness. We believe design is our most powerful tool against oppression, hatred and discrimination. We believe that art is an expression of the soul and that no art is invalid or without meaning. We believe art gives the world beauty and meaning. We believe that art is the mirror which we use in order to reflect ourselves and the world around us. We believe art is an incredibly powerful tool in the face of tyranny. We believe that through compassion and caring we can make the world a better place. We believe that the earth is a home to be cherished and respected. We believe that the land we sit upon is the land of our native elders. We believe that we are one race. We believe there are no borders, no walls and no division that separate man from his fellow man. We believe in a bright future. We believe in a world where we are one. This project was a Hail Mary. I cobbled together this piece right before the deadline and won. I’m still fond of it to this day, even if it isn’t all true.

I’m still quite proud of this piece which is why I decided to feature it in this limited collection of early works. It holds up even seven years later.

I wish I checked my grammar when I submitted this piece and maybe made a couple small changes on the message but overall it continues to endure.
