Simbi Foundation Project
Date: 01/10/2020
Client: Simbi Foundation
Timeline: 4 Months
Project Description
In the beginning of 2020 Alex Gillis a long time friend reached out to me with an opportunity to help the Simbi foundation refresh its brand iconography and completely redesign their website.
I worked directly with the Simbi team at UBC innovation Lab Robson Square preceding the Pandemic. And finished the project remotely in April of 2020.
Relevance
While I’d done a few professional sites previous to this, I’d yet to work on an organizations entire web presence. This project presented a first time opportunity to me to reinvent a brand and a web experience for a company making a huge impact on the lives of children across Uganda.

Design a website for an innovative charitable cause.
Simbi Foundation is a research project, a charitable foundation, an innovation lab and a micro powerplant and community hub for remote communities.
My job at Simbi was to uplift the organization and make it look polished, official, and above all trust worthy. This was all in an attempt to attract new donors and new researchers who could help continue to spearhead their thesis.
I did this by creating a dark, clean and modern site that brings together the work and the research in a seamless intermingling. This site was a team effort and I worked directly with many stakeholders to build the site they wanted.
The most uplifting way to practice design is to enhance the lives of those you’ll never meet a world away.
There we’re several opportunities while working with Simbi to create spin off projects like the “Cellphone Solar Charging Scheme” Which gave coupons out to community members to charge their phones with the brightboxes excess solar power.
These small but impactful projects were eye opening too me and a reminder that even small design decisions and small projects can make a tremendous difference in the lives of those who have the least. And that design can be a tool for helping people thrive. Tangibly.
