Dreamblue AR & Lucid Projection
Date: 10/15/2021
Class Project
Timeline: 3 Months
Project Description
Dreamblue is a speculative design project for DesignCore 310 in which we were asked to imagine future technologies and unique applications where they could be used.
Lucid Projection is part two of this project, it was an attempt to show how the Dreamblue headset would look to a room full of observers.
Relevance
I completed several speculative works during my time at Emily Carr but I haven’t featured any in my portfolio because they lack the scientific basis that I like to rely on to validate my ideas.
However the projection practical side of this project is genuinely interesting and has real world applications.

Speculative design. Underwater augmented reality goggles that help divers see in murky and dark waters.
Prototype Water Screens for projecting 3D scenes in outdoor spaces.
To create these projection I fitted a tube with several ionizing spray applicators and hung it from a pole which was secured to the ceiling or posts nearby. The following projection is due to the light passing through the semi transparent water medium, catching and refracting the light, creating the illusion that a 3D object is floating in front of the viewer in space.
The spinning top effect helps to bring these 3D illusions to life, the water screen is technically 3D but it doesn’t project three dimensionally so I used the spinning top effect to exaggerate the illusion of a 3D object floating in space in front of the viewer.
Tangible speculative design work can be a lot of fun, seeing a hypothesis tangibly come to life is thrilling.
This speculative design project helped me to create a meaningfully interesting project. Water projection had always been something I found really interesting and I’m glad I got to experiment with it.
This is a great example of the process of design leading to unexpected outcomes. i didn’t go into this project with the intention of creating a water screen and 3D projection but it evolved out of necessities in the brief.
