BC Tech Summit Award

Date: 03/15/2017

Award: BC Tech Summit.

Timeline: 4 Months

Project Description

I created and submitted a design for a unique smartwatch to the organizers of the 2017 BC Tech Summit and won the opportunity to present it on stage alone side a video of the product.

The smartwatches key innovation is the design of the interface and the interaction, unlike the apple watch with a digital crown. The face of the watch spins independently allowing you to navigate the mobile operating system by turning the face of the device.

Relevance

This was the first design award I received and coincided with my application to Emily Carr. It was an unbelievable opportunity to be on stage and present my design to thousands of other industry professionals.

The Summit

Here the smartwatch is being worn on stage by Jennifer. The event organizers provided models with disabilities to feature each product.

It was a pleasure working with her, and although there were some timing and technical difficulties it was a great event overall.

The product demonstration took place at the closing plenary Session of the BCTechSummit 2017.

Another perk of being a presenter was spending the day exploring innovation in Vancouver and getting to meet other industry professionals from companies like Microsoft and EA.

Looking back I’m surprised that I was selected to be part of the event, and I have to appreciate the team at BCTech for giving me the opportunity to show my designs to the public at large!

The Smartwatch

Setting

I experimented with placing the watch design in various different celestial environments. The curved black shape of the face allows for lots of interesting renders obscuring the watch itself mixing it seamlessly with different elements and environments.

Function

This render is a glimpse of the functionality of the watch. You can see the border between the face of the watch and the body of the watch and where it merges. There was original design documentation, but unfortunately all of the documentation was lost in the archives.

This is the point at which I entered the school of hard knocks. I was flying high on awards but the reality of me being a very novice designer would come crashing in.

While I’m honored to have been given this award and a chance to present my work. I most certainly was not ready to receive it and this would cause a ripple effect through my early education.

Its at this point in my early studies where I remember the most struggle between me and the institution. I felt unbeatable and eminently talented. I learned quickly that this wasn’t always true, and there was a lot of hard knocks on the horizon.
